The Navajo Board of Election Supervisors and the Navajo Election Administration is established to afford every Navajo individual the opportunity to register to vote and to participate in tribal, county, state, and federal elections whether they reside on or off the Navajo Nation.

Navajo Nation Voter Registration

Navajo Nation Voter Registrars are available at most chapter houses. Voter registration is also available to Navajos living off the reservation. Some Indian Centers throughout the United States provide voter registration for the Navajo Nation. Any qualified Navajo living off of the Navajo Nation can request a voter registration form. Only the Election Administration can mail a voter registration form to the individual requesting the form.

Arizona, Utah or New Mexico Voter Registration

Navajo Election Administration provides voter registration for the Navajo Nation Elections as well as the states of New Mexico, Arizona and Utah. The Navajo Election Administration provides voter registration for the Navajo Nation elections. The state registration forms Arizona, Utah or New Mexico can be picked up from our office, completed and mailed in to the County or State offices.

Navajo Nation Elections

The Navajo Nation Election Administration is responsible for all elections conducted within the Navajo Nation. The Navajo Nation Presidential Election is conducted every four years for the President, Vice-President of the Navajo Nation, the Navajo Nation Council and the Election Board.

The Navajo Nation Chapter Election is conducted every four years for the positions of the Chapter Officers (President, Vice-President and Secretary/Treasurer), Grazing Committee members, Land Board members, School Board members, Farm Board, Election Board and Kayenta Township Commission.

The Navajo Election Administration is also responsible for conducting Special Elections. Special elections are held to fill existing vacancies. Referendum Elections are conducted to afford the Navajo People to initiate changes to the Navajo Nation Government. There are several ways to put referendum on the election ballot.

Other elections, the Navajo Election Administration assists with other elections such the election of the Speaker of the Navajo Nation Council, student council elections at area schools. These other elections are provided as public service and voter education.

Navajo Nation Poll Officials

The Navajo Election Administration is always looking for poll officials to work the Navajo Nation Elections. Volunteers can call the Election Administration to see if poll officials are needed for any upcoming elections.

Poll Officials must meet the following qualifications:

• Shall be able to read and write in English and converse fluently in the Navajo Language.
• Shall attend one poll official training. *Only Chief Poll Judges are required to attend two (2) training sessions per election.
• Shall not be a candidate for an elective office of the Navajo Nation.
• Shall not openly support any candidate.
• No person whose spouse, parent, child, brother, sister, or grandparent is a candidate on the ballot shall serve as a poll official within that percint or chapter.
• Shall be an eligible, registered voter of the Navajo Nation.
